LO-FI ZINE Assignment : Task 6 & 7 : How Zines are made and history

Zines can be made in lots of varieties depending on what the artist or photographer wanted to portray, this means they can also vary in cost because a zine with larger, full page images will cost more to print than one with blank pages and smaller images because less ink is being used. Some zines vary because they are made to look more like books than zines.

Here are some prices of printing :

Some zine printers may give you discount if they liked or supported the work that you were displaying in your zine. Zines are often distributed by trade, and sold at house shows, zine events and book fairs. Prices of zines vary depending on printing cost and the photographer/artists choice. Prices will be higher if they are neatly bound and are in colour rather than black and white. If the artist/photographer is fairly well known they can up the prices of their zines. Usually a zine would cost around £1.50 - £3, however, if the producer was more well known then the price could be as much as £10+. Whilst there are these independent companies out there who publish zines, a wide majority of zines are self published.

History of zines :

Zines originally started from people writing and wanting to self publish their work. Once this had been going for a while, zines were being recognized as a way to publish and get peoples work out there, so artists and art movements were heavily involved in creating zines from the early 20th century. Publishers would produce works comprising of a huge variety of subjects, ranging between rock music, bowling, propaganda to daily experiences of the artists/photographers life. Over time, zine publishers and producers gathered audiences and demand for monthly and weekly issues. In the USA science fiction fans started posting their own stories and producing them in a collective zine of stories called a "fanzine" - fan magazine. Which was later shortened to 'zine'.
