LOCATION TECHNIQUES : External Flash Gun

Here an external flash gun has been used with an aim to light up the subject leaving the background sort of dark and moody. Here we were working out where to position the flash gun to give the effect we were aiming for. Unfortunately we only had a very small flash gun and therefore couldn't always light up everyone's faces, and definitely couldn't light up their whole bodies.

These two images were taken from below as we were stood on a wall. I don't think that the flash gun has worked very well here because it was too low down to reach the subjects to create the desired lighting. In this lesson we were intending to create light on the subject to make the background darker and almost make the background not look real/look like a green screen.

Here the flash gun has been used to create a beam of light down the floor on the left side of the subjects. This adds a lot of depth to the photograph and I love the difference between the highlights and the shadows. I really love this photograph. It is a great example of how lighting can be transported to different locations and make them more interesting than if just a camera had been used instead of portable lighting.

Here the same technique has been used to create the beam of light on the floor near the subjects.

Here are a couple of images that I took :
