The course so far...

I believe that I should be on the BTEC National Diploma in Photography because I have never been so passionate about a particular subject. I love everything I do that is based around photography; shooting at college, shooting at home, shooting on location, editing, experimenting, and looking at other peoples work. I believe that I am growing as a photographer since being on the course and it has made me realise how much I want a career in this field of work. I can sit researching other photographers and spend time in photography exhibitions for hours on end. I am fascinated by the way that a camera can hold memories for a lot longer and in more detail than the human brain does. At college I have enjoyed everything I’ve done except I found the Street Photography a little uncomfortable because I felt like I was invading peoples privacy. I especially enjoy the more experimental and artistic photography such as slow shutter speed shooting with lights, creating beams of light in an image. There isn’t really a particular style of teaching that helps me more, I like watching presentations and videos, I like a hands on approach by taking pictures as we are learning the techniques and I like being given hand outs to look back on in my own time if I am revisiting a particular style of photography that I have forgotten how to do. The only thing I don’t really enjoy or find very useful at college is when we do photography in a big group. For example, when we were shooting architecture around Leeds, we all walked round together in a big group and I found it very hard to shoot anything worth looking at because I constantly was worrying about if I was lagging behind or holding anybody up. I am much more productive when I am on my own or in a small group of people because I can use the time that I need to photograph what I want and get the shot right. Also, in the studio photography we are all in a big group with one backdrop and one camera, waiting one by one to have a go at taking one or two photographs of a model. I don’t really enjoy this because I feel like when I am taking the photograph I am hogging the camera and should give it to somebody else to have a go with. I would create a lot more work that I am proud of if we were in small groups and had more time with the camera to get the particular shot we want. I believe that I should stay on this course because I am willing to work as hard as I can to get the best grades possible. I am travelling quite far every day from York to Leeds to do this course but the travel doesn’t matter when I am enjoying what I do so much.
